We may not know much about the deep sea, but do we care about mining it?

The way we value the environment affects how treat it. While public awareness of human impacts on ocean is increasing, industrial activities in deep sea are accelerating rapidly and out sight. underlying values hold for were increasingly recognised as an important factor environmental decision-making, it was thus to evaluate towards deep-sea environments. Here, explored people's care related this perceived risks seafloor mining by comparing three other remote environments: Antarctica, terrestrial environments Moon. We conducted online survey investigate symbolic values, which define emotions, moods meanings evokes, element affecting environment. In addition, investigated respondent's knowledge, worldviews societal risk these four found that shape overall attributed each differs. People likely will take place sea, majority respondents (81%) stated a lot or very much about harming sea. comparison environments, general sense people cared less their self-assessed knowledge lower. These results suggest fundamental account emotions when evaluating settings. Our further highlighted need improve understanding connection with its role within wider society engender stewardship.
